Scott's
practice emphasizes complex commercial litigation, primarily
in the area of protecting intellectual property rights. He
has represented a variety of clients in the technology and
entertainment industries in matters involving satellite signal
theft, software and hardware counterfeiting, copyright, patent
and trademark litigation; misappropriation of trade secrets,
unfair business practices, and defamation, employment and
contract actions.
Scott
began his law practice in San Francisco with Morrison & Foerster.
He served as law clerk to United States District Court Judge
Thomas S. Zilly, Western District of Washington, from 1989
to 1991. He then joined the firm of Culp, Guterson & Grader
in 1991, and worked primarily in complex commercial litigation.
Scott has been a named partner with our firm since 1995. Representative
clients include DIRECTV, Inc., News Datacom Limited, NDS Americas,
Inc., Motion Picture Association of America ("MPAA"), Molecular
Biosystems, Inc., Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and the
Estate of Janis Joplin. In addition, Scott has served as a
Special Master, by appointment of the United States District
Court, and lectures on technology related legal issues.
Scott graduated magna cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1988. He authored the law review article, "When a Security Becomes a Liability: Claims Against Lenders in Hazardous Waste Cleanup," 38 Hastings Law Journal 1261 (1987). He was elected to Order of the Coif and Thurston Honor Society and he served as an extern to California Supreme Court Justice Allen E. Broussard, in 1987. Scott received his undergraduate degree, with distinction, from Stanford University. Prior to law school, Scott served as legislative aide (defense, foreign affairs, trade) to then-United States Congressman, and former White House Chief of Staff, Leon E. Panetta (1982-1985).
